How do you paint a hole? It’s actually quite simple – but at the same time, there are two valuable lessons in it. [Read More…]
Fun. Passion. And Food for Thought.
The Hidden Things was born out of our passion for the structures which drive things – and how the same structures show up in seemingly unrelated areas of life.
Like, you know, in railway signals, databases and public bathrooms.
Alas, a lot of people hear terms like “structure” or “patterns” and tune out. They think this stuff is boring, hard-to-understand and definitely no fun.
To be fair: Most of the time, these terms are grossly abused to mean stuff that really is boring. 😉
But there is another side to structure, and to patterns, templates and symmetries:
There is beauty in it. Inspiration. The freedom of mind to transfer structure from one area to another – to think new things and try new paths.
There is a creative, playful, curious, connecting and open-minded side of structure which a lot of people are missing, because they are too focused on structure as fixed, confining – and boring.
But since you’re here, we’d bet that you know and value this other side!
That you enjoy looking for connections, or for a transfer from other fields. That you can truly savour a beautiful symmetry. And that you love to be inspired to think further.
(As an aside, we’d also bet that you’ve experienced your fair share of situations where you felt a bit weird because of that, haven’t you?)
Because we’re really passionate about all this (and we were sick of feeling weird about it), we’ve finally started a tribe of like-minded people here on The Hidden Things:
People who enjoy transferring knowledge and strategies to other areas, to play around with it and spot connections.
People who don’t think it’s strange to get excited about structures, patterns or symmetries – or about the connection between railway signals, database programming and public loos.
In other words: People like you!
And we love to share the fun, our insights and our passion with you – and to give you lots of food for thought.
‘Cause there’s always something else to discover, to learn and to think about, right?
So, what are “The Hidden Things”?
The short answer is:
The Hidden Things are the structures (aka patterns, relations, symmetries, schemes, …) which define a lot of things in life.
Most of the time, these structures go unnoticed.
But here on The Hidden Things, it’s our mission to uncover these structures for you – and to have a lot of fun together while we do that!
(If you’d rather read the long answer, click here.
And if you’re really impatient by now and want to read up on that mysterious structure which connects the railway signals, the databases and the public loos, you could jump straight to this article.)
In complex systems, the whole is a lot more than the sum of its parts – but how do you make this principle tangible and easy to see? Well, that’s simple… [Read More…]
You’ve got a problem or an issue. You know something is at the core of it, but you can’t really put your finger on it. Here’s how a concept from particle physics can help you figure out what’s at the core of your problem. [Read More…]
There’s a reason why you enjoy our content here on The Hidden Things – and it’s based on some deep-rooted desire that goes back way into your childhood. [Read More…]
In an amazing number of real-life problems, you have to satisfy three requirements. But finding “the” optimal solution to these problems is mostly not an optimization problem, even if it looks like that on first glance… and hitting two outa three of your requirements sometimes really isn’t bad at all! By now, everybody knows that soap kills coronaviruses. But what’s the mechanism behind that? And more importantly: What are the surprising lessons we can learn from it for other areas of our lives? [Read More…]
Who is behind it?
We’re two sisters with different strengths, different viewpoints and different skills, but we share one passion:
We love to discover structures, and we love to see connections between seemingly unrelated things.
On The Hidden Things, we’ve decided to share this passion with you.

But hang on, there’s one more thing…
This is the place where we tell you with a wide smile (think toothpaste ad) that you REALLY should sign up for our emails.
Although, in all fairness, you should. ;-)
Inside said emails, we'll point you to content on The Hidden Things (and elsewhere) that you might enjoy.
We might also mention products from time to time, ours and those of others - if they are related to The Hidden Things, if they are something you should know about, and if we'd honestly mention them to our best friends, too.
(Btw, we have the nagging feeling that some of these best friends ARE on our mailing list, which feels at bit creepy at times.)
Anyway, what else will be in our emails? Right, subscriber-only content - stuff that we write, draw, curate, ... exclusively for subscribers.
So if you've enjoyed the content here on our website, you really SHOULD sign up for our emails. Just sayin'...
We'll send you emails whenever we have something of value to talk about. None of the "shit-it's-Friday-again-and-we-still-need-to-send-this-week's-email" kinda stuff!
Also, there is an unsubscribe link in each of our emails, and we'll never sell, rent or otherwise abuse your emails (or your trust)!
And if you want to read the long version, here's our privacy information.
