Welcome back to Unit 10 of the Modern Order of Essenes course! If you are new to the course, it starts out here with Unit 1. And in order to see all the course-related posts on one page, click here.
This unit finally starts using the “real” healing technique, aka the Healing Hands, which you’ve faithfully empowered for quite a few weeks now (or at least I hope you have! π ).
Although I sincerely hope that by now, you have realized that everything you have done is part of spiritual healing, both for you and for the world around you, and that all these practices are worth doing…
Before we dive into the coursework, a quick reminder: If you haven’t yet replied to my questions about attunement scheduling at the end of Unit 9, please hop back there now and do so. It’ll help me with the scheduling. The same holds for any feedback you might have about the course which could help me to improve the upcoming Healer part. Thanks! π
Coursework
- To Study – “The Ethics of Using Your Healing Hands”
Study the section “The Ethics of Using Your Healing Hands”.
In addition to this read: If you intend to use the spiritual healing techniques of the MOE on others (including, but not limited to Healing Hands), also research the rules and laws in your jurisdiction to find out if you are permitted to do so, and to what extent. The MOE does not condone its practitioners violating the law. Please make sure you stay far away from anything which could count as such!

Reflection Question
While you do the work of Unit 10, take some time to reflect on the following question:
How could you heal yourself?
Meditation Topics
If you need fodder for your discursive meditations beyond what you have found in this unit’s texts, the following topics should give you something to work with:
- What is the difference between healing yourself and healing others?
- How does energy flow?
- What can you learn from the way energy flows?
- What is the role of the male element in healing?
- What is the role of the female element in healing?
- What does a stiff muscle do, and what does it not do?
- Why do you deactivate your Healing Hands?
- Why do some things need to be reactivated?
- How is your life a blessing for others?
- How is your life a blessing for yourself?
- Could you be on a Blessing Walk all the time? Why, or why not – and how?
- What is the difference between a Blessing Walk, prayer, and meditation?
And if you have enough ideas on your own and don’t need any from this list, that’s even better!
Commentary
Blessing Walk
Step 7 of the Blessing Walk essentially means being on a Blessing Walk all the time, 24/7, throughout your life. Of course, that’s easier said than done (unless you should be a lot more saintly than me, in which case: kudos to you, and are you sure you even need to practice the MOE at all? π )
For all the others: We’re all just human. Remember what I wrote in my commentary last time, and don’t beat yourself up if you aren’t perfect, and never will be. Good enough is more than fine, and even just a tiny little bit better than before makes the world a better place than it was!
Again, the important part at this stage is not to become perfect – but to make sure the Blessing Walk doesn’t slowly fall by the wayside in your everyday life. Make sure you either continue to do dedicated Blessing Walks, or to have well-working reminders or routines which keep the Blessing Walk active in your consciousness and life.
Muscle Testing
The Stiff Arm Technique is the first muscle testing technique which is mostly intended for use on others. Doing it on yourself would be really cumbersome, and you have already learned some much more suitable techniques.
Thus, at this stage, there are several things to consider:
First, if you don’t have anybody to test this technique on, that’s perfectly fine. The opportunity might arise later, or it might not. If all you ever do is use muscle testing for yourself, you’ve gained a lot. I.e. if you don’t have to the chance to do muscle testing on others while you work on this unit, just file the reference for whenever the need might arise, and practice one of the other techniques instead!
Secondly, if you do practice on others, remember you’re not a master yet, but just starting out. Your results might or might not be valid – and you probably don’t have the experience yet to say so with confidence.
Also remember that muscle testing gives you a momentary snapshot. If it tells you somebody else shouldn’t eat X, this doesn’t have to be valid throughout their lives, but might just mean “right now”.
To competently do meaningful and more finegrained muscle testing on others requires more training as you can get through the MOE course. You’ll either need to get this training through the appropriate amount of practice (and constant personal humility), or through other means (e.g. courses, working with an experienced practitioner, …).
Finally, please remember all the caveats not just about ethics, but also about your local law etc!
Healing Hands: Preliminaries
I’m not going to go into the spiel about ethics, morals, local laws and regulations etc again. You should know this by now, and if not: scroll up or browse through earlier units! π
But there are some practical preliminaries before we dive into the actual practice:
First, and most importantly: Start out practicing on yourself before you attempt to heal others!
Seriously. Having experienced any effects on yourself will help you to treat others more competently. Also, it’s easy to overdo it and knock yourself out. If you do Healing Hands on yourself first, it’s much less likely for this to happen.
Secondly, it’s perfectly fine to only ever use the Healing Hands on yourself. You don’t have to treat others if you don’t have the chance to do so, it’s not allowed where you live, or if you don’t feel comfortable doing so for whatever reason.
Each time you treat yourself, you bring more divine healing energies into this world. Over time, this adds up, even if all you ever do is treating yourself.
Thirdly, if you should treat others, don’t do it from a place of ego (to the extent that this is possible for us humans at all). It’s way too easy to attempt to “heal” others because one feel’s superior. Or because one is so excited about this awesome new healing technique which will surely heal everything. Or because one doesn’t want to accept that sometimes healing isn’t possible. Or because one feels like an expert, even though we all still have so much to learn. Or …
Well, you get the idea. π
To the extent possible, when treating others, put your ego aside. Treat them with the open and curious mind of a child, go with the flow, and accept whatever happens.
(I know this isn’t fully possible – but we can at least try, right?)
Finally, whenever you work with these divine healing energies, e.g. through the Healing Hands: Remember that this isn’t a jukebox where you put a coin into the slot, press a button, and out comes the healing you ordered.
“Healing” can mean many different things, and sometimes some of these things are not what we wanted to achieve. The divine healing energies will do their work as they see fit, whether you like it or not. Thus please use discernment, and if in doubt, think long and hard before you attempt a healing which (from our human perspectives) might backfire!
Healing Hands: Treating Yourself
This is the first thing you should do when you start using the Healing Hands. The instructions say to do at least two sessions per day, but if all you get to is one, that’s a lot better than nothing.
The sessions don’t have to be long at all. Practicing daily for a couple of minutes is worth more than once a week for half an hour. The important part is to gain experience, and to be able to handle the energies ever better.
When starting out for yourself, you might wonder what you can treat. Well, why don’t you try everything which comes to mind? The power of self-treatment is that you can experiment and gain experience!
Thus anything you can come up with, physical, emotional, habits/patterns, mental, spiritual, energetic, … is fair game. Please use your common sense, though, and listen to and trust your intuition: If some treatment isn’t good for you, STOP! (or don’t even start if you know that beforehand)
The instructions are mostly written from a perspective of treating others. When treating yourself, imagining the energy flows can be a bit awkward at the beginning. What helps me is to focus not on the flow within my body (i.e. from the left hand, up the arm, across the back, down the right arm, and out your right hand), but instead to focus on the external flows:
You can be in any comfortable position. Hold your hands up in a comfortable way, palms loosely towards yourself or the body parts you intend to treat. Then imagine your left palm pulling these divine healing energies towards it through your body – like a wind being pulled towards the part of your body you’re attempting to heal.
They’ll automatically enter through your left palm, and exit at your right palm. But the important thing isn’t what happens at this part of the circuit, but that they move through your relevant body area first. That way, once you take your hands out of the equation and deactivate them, the “wind” of divine healing energy will continue to blow or flow through you.
If e.g. I wanted to treat my thigh, I’d point both palms towards that thigh with some distance in between, then imagine the left hand “sucking” the divine healing energies through the thigh into the left palm. From there it’ll automatically flow through my body circuit and out on the right side, which is again pointing towards the thigh (i.e. the divine healing energy goes through the thigh twice at this stage, although I don’t focus on anything in the circuit which comes after my left hand – they flow automatically through my body, and will do so through yours, since you have practiced activating your Healing Hands for so many weeks now!).
Once the flow is firmly established, I remove my palms, bring them together once more and thank the divine energies, then deactivate my hands. The healing energies are still rushing or flowing through the thigh, even if I don’t pick them up with my left hand anymore.
I hope this makes sense – if not, please ask in the comments. π I have found self-treatment to be a lot easier and more logical when I imagine the energy flow this way. Strictly following the instructions, it has always felt somewhat awkward to me, although your mileage might vary, of course!
One other important point: Do not ever push the divine healing energies out of your right hand into whomever you are treating!
Pushing energies out of you might lead to you pushing your own life energy out as well, with two resulting issues: a. your own life energy isn’t the same as the divine healing energy. Best case, it won’t do much. Worst case, you might transfer your own (health or other) issues onto whomever you are attempting to treat. And b., chances are good you’ll push out more than is flowing into you – which means you’ll literally suck yourself dry of life force.
Do not do this ever – always focus on the divine healing energies streaming and flowing into yourself. Once you’re sufficiently filled up with them, they will automaticllay flow through you in the channel you have so meticulously established the past few weeks by activating your Healing Hands!
Healing Hands: Duration of Treatment
There is no hard and fast rule for how long a treatment session should last. Ideally, you’ll feel it when the energy flow is firmly established, and can close the connection at this point. The divine energies will continue to flow. (If you do self-treatment and are sensible to this kind of thing, you might feel them flowing afterwards.)
If you can’t feel anything, or aren’t sure, just go with your intuition, If it feels like things are done, or as if you could/should stop, then do that. You can always come back and do another session later.
Also, it’s possible to overdo it even with beneficial energies, and to knock yourself out in one way or another. This might manifest as energetic problems, a headache, a cold, or whatever else. Unless you really go way beyond what you can reasonably handle, these will be small and non-permanent signs for you to back off a bit, and you should respect them as such.
Healing Hands: What to expect
While Healing Hands is a powerful method of spiritual healing, it’s not better or worse than other healing methods. Sometimes it will work great, sometimes it will work, and sometimes it won’t.
The latter can be due to various things. Generally speaking, there are cases where healing isn’t supposed to happen, where one or more beings involved don’t want it to happen, or where a specific healing method simply isn’t a good fit for various reasons. If this should be the case, don’t beat yourself up – but also don’t despair, but keep practicing on other things.
The more you practice, the more you will achieve. But even the best healers will never be able to heal everybody from everything!
(If you can manage to stay modest and humble in your practice, any failures will be a lot easier on your ego. If not, well, there is always some personal lesson to learn… π )
Healing Hands: Treating Others
Again, this section isn’t about ethics, morals or the law, but about practical advice from somebody who has been there and has some of the related shirts in her closet. π
First and foremost: You can not treat others if you aren’t well yourself. Seriously. Don’t attempt treatments for others at times when you’re not up to it for whatever reason.
If you’ve ever flown on a plane, you might remember how, in the safety instructions, the crew always tell you to put on your own oxygen mask first before you help others. It’s the same with spiritual healing: Make sure your own oxygen mask is in the right place and fitting tight, and only then attempt to help others with theirs.
Secondly, the instructions explicitly say “you can feel energy flowing into your left hand but not from your client.”. This is important. Do not attempt to pull or visualize energy from the person you treat flowing into you – unless you are very keen on picking up their ailments and issues, of course!
Instead, always imagine the divine healing energies flowing into you, and then into the other person.
(Incidentally, this is another reason to take good care of yourself: Whomever you are treating will get some energy blast which is flowing straight through you. Would you really want them to pick up sick, unhealthy or weak energies from you?)
I.e. you imagine the energies flowing in at your left palm, going through the circuit in you, then exiting at your right palm and flowing into the other person. Or at least, that’s what the instructions say. π
Because the tricky part in this imagination is the point when you yourself disconnect from the flow – after all, once the energy flow through you disconnects, nothing is flowing through the other person anymore either, isn’t it?
What helps me at this stage is, again, to imagine the divine energy flow as a wind which is blowing into me first, but then extends or expands to blow through both of us at the same time. I.e. the circuit through my arms and back is only the initial starting point to get the flow going at all. Once a flow is established, it can become stronger and encompass other areas as well.
You can imagine other ways for the energies to flow if this should work better for you (and please do share in the comments in this case!). But remember to a. never consciously pull energies from the other person into yourself, and b. to never push energies out of yourself, but instead to always focus on the in-flow!
You might need to play with this a bit, and please don’t hesitate to comment below if you have any questions or run into any issues!
Finally, one more point of self-care: I have found that when treating others, it helps a lot to finish the session with a short cleansing for yourself, just in case something unhelpful got stuck at your end:
Simply do another round of healing for yourself. Focus on the intention that “everything which belongs to me and does me good will stay with me, and everything which doesn’t belong to me or which doesn’t do me good will be taken away by the flow of divine healing energies”, or something to this effect, then let the energies flow through you once more.
This should clean up any remaning residue.
Healing Hands: Whom can you treat?
Again, this isn’t about ethics or judicial regulations, but about practical questions.
Besides yourself and other human beings, you can treat other beings and things as well. Try e.g. plants, pets or animals. You could also try objects like machines, tools, …, if you’re so inclined. Or places. Or higher beings (use common sense and ask for permission!), the dead, your ancestors, earth, natural features like springs, woods, …
Just keep two things in mind: a. always back off immediately if you feel the treatment isn’t welcome – or ask beforehand if you have any means of doing so!. And b., don’t aim too big and knock yourself out.
Further Resources
I usually haven’t pointed them out separately, but when you read the MOE material online on JMG’s dreamwidth site, there are comment sections below each entry, and some comments are well worth reading.
You’re already aware of John Gilbert’s audio files. The relevant files for the Healing Breath and the foot reflexology have been listed in the respective units where the work was introduced, and you can easily look them up in the past units if you are so inclined.
As you proceed with Step 7 of the Blessing Walk, you can refer back to the audio file with the name “Walk.mp3” if you are so inclined.
For the Healing Hands, there are several resources:
The first one is my summary of a talk fellow Master Teacher Guillem gave at the recent Ecosophia Convention in Glastonbury. I highly recommend reading it! Guillem gave a wonderful and very helpful personal account of his own MOE journey and experiences. Some of it relates to the Healing Hands practice and to issues of treating others, and is thus highly relevant for this unit:
You can download my report about the Glastonbury Convention here (Guillem’s talk can be found on pages 17 and 18).
There are also two audio files about the Healing Hands in John Gilbert’s collection:
AE-L1.mp3 covers the Healing Hands. It differs a wee bit in the deactivation, but is otherwise a solid reflection of the practice as given in the written instructions. Please note that I do have some major issues with how it reflects the ethics of treating others, though – please don’t take this part as gospel, but instead use your own ethical and moral understanding and judgement.
Starting around minute 14:40, this audio also contains a section about teaching “your clients” how to activate their Healing Hands. Please note that I do not endorse this, and neither does the MOE.
This has nothing to do with gatekeeping, btw. π The MOE material is out there, freely available for all to practice. But: In order to perform the Healing Hands, one should follow the full course of study. Both to make them an effective tool, and to avoid overtaxing oneself.
There are also good reasons for the requirement that only Master Teachers teach the MOE to others. Again, this isn’t about gatekeeping – and there are things like foot reflexology which, at the simple level of the MOE, you can easily show to your friends or family without being a Master Teacher.
But the MOE as a whole is a full system which deserves and requires to be fully digested and understood in order to pass it on – and some of the practices, like the Healing Hands, require a certain amount of practice and experience in order to competently teach them to others.
The second audio file which is relevant to the Healing Hands has the obvious name Hands.mp3. It covers activating and using the Healing Hands in a somewhat meditative style. If you’re into audios, give it a try and see if it works for you.
Finally, there is, as usual, our own comment section from Unit 9 as a valuable resource. (Still fairly empty at the time of me writing this, but the comment sections of the course usually fill up over time…)
Outlook
Unit 11 will go live on Sunday, July 6th, 2025.
Until then, I’m looking forward to your comments and your feedback, and I hope you enjoy the Healing Hands! π
Vicki says
Wonderful, thank you! I so appreciate your Commentary and examples. Congratulations on being consecrated as Bishop. We are lucky students to have your wisdom, insights and dedication!
Regine says
Thanks for your congratulations! π But youβre giving me too much credit. I very much enjoy doing this course, and itβs also important to me to pass this system on. So this really is all in my own interestβ¦ (Iβm also a lot less wise than I might appear online!) π
